Description

The David Brown 990 is a classic and highly versatile utility tractor produced at the Meltham Mills factory in Huddersfield, England, spanning from 1961 to 1980. It began as part of the Implematic range before transitioning to the “Selectamatic” series in the mid-1960s. Renowned as a reliable workhorse, the 990 was designed for mid-power agricultural tasks and became one of the most successful and popular models produced by David Brown, with over 67,000 units manufactured, making it a favorite among collectors and farmers today.

Engine and Performance
The heart of the David Brown 990 is its durable four-cylinder diesel engine. Early models featured a 3.0-liter diesel, which later evolved into a 3.2-liter (195 cu·in) naturally aspirated powerplant, producing approximately 52 to 55 horsepower at 2,200 RPM. This engine was noted for its excellent fuel efficiency, ease of maintenance, and high torque, often praised by farmers as a “gutty” engine that performed better the harder it was worked.

Transmission and Hydraulics
The 990 was initially launched with a six-forward, two-reverse gear “crash” gearbox, which was a robust, albeit manual, option. Later models, particularly after 1965, introduced the innovative “Selectamatic” hydraulic system. This system allowed operators to easily select between depth, height, and traction control for implements via a single knob. Later versions also featured a 12-forward and four-reverse gear option, enhancing versatility.

Design and Legacy
Early models were adorned in the traditional red colour scheme, but after 1967, the 990 adopted the distinctive white and brown livery that characterized later David Brown tractors. It was typically equipped with an open operator station in early years, later offering cab options, and provided features like Livedrive PTO (Power Take-Off). Today, the David Brown 990 is recognized for its longevity and is popular in the vintage tractor market for its dependability. David Brown 990 Tractor
