Description

The 2023 KTM 450 SX-F arrives as a ground-up redesign, representing a significant leap forward in technology and performance for the Austrian manufacturer’s flagship motocrosser. Engineered to dominate the open class, the new generation features a completely revamped chassis, engine, and ergonomics, aimed at improving mass centralization and anti-squat behavior, resulting in a more planted and stable ride.
Engine and Performance
At the heart of the 2023 450 SX-F is a new SOHC engine that is lighter and more compact, weighing just 26.8 kg. Tilted 2 degrees backward, the engine allows for better centralization and a lower front sprocket position. It delivers a remarkably broad, linear powerband with over 63 HP, which is both explosive in top-tier racing and manageable for less experienced riders. The bike features a 5-speed transmission by Pankl Racing Systems and, for the first time, a new Quickshifter function, allowing for seamless, clutchless upshifts from second to fifth gear. Riders can choose between two engine maps and adjust traction control or launch control via a new handlebar-mounted switch.
Chassis and Handling
The 2023 model boasts a new, hydro-formed, laser-cut, and robot-welded chromoly steel frame designed for improved energy absorption and, consequently, reduced rider fatigue. A key update is the hybrid, polyamide-reinforced aluminum subframe, which offers exceptional rider feedback and durability. The bike is slightly heavier than its predecessor, with a wet weight of around 239 lbs, but it maintains a nimble feel. Handling is complemented by 48mm WP XACT air forks with new hydrostops for better bottoming resistance and a shorter, lighter WP XACT shock featuring tool-free adjustments.
Ergonomics and Design
The 2023, 450 SX-F features improved ergonomics, with a flatter seat profile, high-grip seat cover, and new bodywork designed to aid movement and control. The rider triangle is designed for better knee contact, especially when standing. It also features larger footpegs, which are designed to reduce mud buildup and improve grip.
Verdict
The 2023 KTM 450 SX-F is a highly advanced “Ready to Race” machine that, despite being more rigid than previous models, offers superior stability and handling in demanding, high-stress conditions.
