Description

The 2002 Yamaha Banshee (YFZ350P) remains one of the most iconic and revered sport ATVs in history, representing a pinnacle of two-stroke, high-performance technology before the industry shifted toward four-stroke machines. Known for its screaming, high-RPM powerband and distinctive exhaust note, the 2002 model is a staple of dune-riding culture and a highly sought-after, collectible machine.
Engine and Performance
At the heart of the 2002 Banshee is a 347cc liquid-cooled, two-stroke, parallel-twin engine, famously derived from Yamaha’s RZ350 street motorcycle. This powerplant is fed by dual Mikuni 26mm carburetors, delivering raw, aggressive acceleration designed primarily for open sand dunes and fast trails. Producing approximately 34-38 horsepower in stock form, the Banshee is known for being relatively slow on low-end torque but violent in the mid-to-high RPM range. The 2002 model is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, allowing riders to keep the engine in its powerband.
Chassis and Suspension
The Banshee features a rigid steel frame with an overall weight of 386 lbs (dry). The suspension system consists of independent double-wishbone front suspension offering 9.1 inches of travel and a rear swingarm with a linkage-assisted shock providing 8.7 inches of travel. The 2002 model features triple hydraulic disc brakes (dual front, single rear) to provide stopping power for its high-speed capability.
Design and Rarity
The 2002 model year is part of the long 1987–2006 US production run and is highly prized, particularly in its original form. It features distinct twin headlights, a 3.2-gallon fuel tank, and a kickstarter (no electric start or reverse, emphasizing its racing roots). The 2002 model is often found in classic blue and white, although other Yamaha color schemes were available. Finding a 2002 model with original stock parts, including the stock exhaust and OEM tires, is becoming rare, making them highly desirable for collectors.
With its unparalleled two-stroke sound and lightweight chassis, the 2002 Yamaha Banshee is considered the ultimate “fun” machine for enthusiasts who prefer a raw, mechanical riding experience.
